Vivid Services

Vivid hair color: Value & Pricing

Every Hair colorist’s prices colorful hair services differently depending on the cost of living in the area, the hair products being used, the amount of time the appointment takes, the appliances used for the process (like color lamps), and the stylist’s knowledge or expertise. Rainbow and unicorn hair color services will cost $75 to $150 per service hour.

Most fun, rainbow, or bright hair colors require application over white-blonde or yellow hair for the dye or color to show, much like watercolor on a white canvas. Usually, if the hair isn’t highlighted, balayage, or lightened already, it will need to be bleached to achieve the lightness and to prepare the hair for the bright or vibrant color. The hair must be healthy enough to hold the color pigment in the dye, but also porous or damaged just enough that it doesn’t deflect the color from entering the hair strand during processing or staining. For best results, stylists will use a bond builder during this first step to achieve even porosity and the correct underlying color while paying close attention to old or box color on hair. A bleachout or balayage highlight are two ways of preparing the hair for unicorn colors. Bleachouts require monthly maintenance, whereas most balayage bleach services can be touched up every 3 months, 6 months, or not at all.

After the hair bleach is done processing and is rinsed from the hair is dried and the second process begins. The rainbow and unicorn colors are usually applied to hair that is dried completely This depositing color usually only takes 15 to 20 minutes of the color being on the strand to stain the hair a bright color before it is rinsed out. Some products are put under heat, some are not! The bright colors are usually made from organic and vegan pigments.

WHAT RAINBOW HAIR COLOR IS BEST FOR ME?

Depending on your skin tone, you might be able to get away with blue hair without looking washed out like a zombie!

Olive or cool toned skin colors will look great with warmer color. Warm skin will look good with cooler, hues like purple, blue, and sometimes green. You will also want to take your skin lightness or darkness and your personal style into account so that you can assess how much contrast you want against your face. If you wear a lot of patterns in your clothing, you might want to choose a deep color so that your hair color and clothing patterns don’t compete. Or if you wear plain clothes, maybe lighter and multicolored  and bright would be a good accessory.  Cooler colors often take more processing, because the hair must be lightened to almost white before applying them. It is important to talk to the stylist about hair health expectations when deciding on a color. These are just suggestions - you can do whatever you want!

INTRODUCE WITH HIDDEN COLOR UNDERNEITH

Hidden unicorn, rainbow, or oil slick hair panels are probably the best way to introduce yourself to fun colors. The color won’t overwhelm you, and you will  be able to notice how the colors fade and blend with your hair. The hidden color pieces can also grow out over time without needing to be touched up, or more deposit-only color can be applied over the faded fun color to create a different look.

A GOOD STYLISTS MEETS DAMAGED HAIR

Do you have damaged hair but want a color change? The best stylists will lead you to color combination changes that can be applied over faded color or damaged hair while keeping it healthy.  Warmer shades, purple hair, red hair, orange hair, and sometimes neon green or neon yellow can sometimes be achieved. The main goal of processing should be to keep healthier hair. Damaged hair doesn’t look good no matter what color it is!

The beauty of neon, pastel and vibrant colors is that the deposit-only pastel, neon, or vivid hair colors can be overlapped or reapplied at any point in the fading process because they are plant-based products that don’t need to be mixed with peroxide. Adding overlapping color this way is a great way to condition overprocessed hair while keeping the color from looking dull or faded.

HAIR COLOR CORRECTION AT VIBRANCE HAIR STUDIO

If you are interested in correction, I'd love to chat with you about goals & expectations.

Experienced colorists will need to test different hair color removers to see which product or combination of products will remove the color while leaving the hair in a healthy state. This is also called a “color correction” or alteration. Using the right combination of removers and bleach in the wrong order can lead to the rainbow pigment being pushed more into the cuticle of the hair, making it even harder for even experienced professionals to remove without damaging the hair completely.

Brad Mondo and I appreciate the bravery it takes to do your own hair, but if you are concerned with how it will feel after you bleach it, or if you are going for a specific style, it is worth the money and time to seek out a great colorist. If you are set on applying your own rainbow hair color, a salon near you can do the bleaching process, so you don’t damage your hair.
